I don’t know how much I like the color scheme I picked. I like the colors themselves, but it doesn’t really reflect the image I had in my head. And I know that happens very frequently, so I’m not upset about it, but it will take a little getting used to. Also I’m not sure if I want to show the original picture that I stenciled from because that just leads to comparison, then sometimes judgement from the audience. I will defiantly show some pictures though.

Execution

Today I finished stenciling the apples in the urinal. I made two copies of it; one on paper, one on glass. The glass one pealed off in little spots but I think it might make it look cooler. I’m not sure how much I like either one right now though, so I am going to sleep on it and decide in the morning. During the presentation tomorrow I am going to show some of the pictures I took and then show the steps leading to the final result. I am happy with the process I created. It was fun and kept me busy.

Process

Currently I am in the process of making a probably 5 layered stencil. For those of you who are not familiar stenciling, it is similar to silk screening. If you are not familiar with silk screening, google it. The stencil is going to be of the second image I posted with the yellow apple in the background. I have stenciled a few different times with spray paint, but never with 5 layers and never with acrylic paint. As I am researching, more, I think it would be cool to silk screen some t-shirts, but I do not have the materials or the time right now. Nonetheless, I am still excited to stencil the image. My issue now is figuring out what my canvas will be.

Bobbing for Apples

After much thought, I have finally realized what my inspiration for apples in urinals is.

According to biblical references, when Eve ate fruit from the tree of knowledge (often depicted as apples), she changed what would become humanity. She made us how we are today. Apples made us how we are. So, apples can be symbolic of humanity as a whole.

There are many aspects in our society that are ruining humanity. A few are the global economy, genocide, and poverty. In the layman’s terms, humanity is in the shitter. Or in my case, the pisser. To show this down fall of modern society, I have placed apples in the pisser.

Execution: Here is one photo that I like from a series I took...

Execution: Here is one photo that I like from a series I took yesterday. I like the composition of it and the colors. I think it could use some touch ups in Photoshop, then I will be pretty happy with it. I haven’t picked the rest of the pictures for the final series, but I think this one will be in it. I also may need to take more photos than I currently have.

Questions

For Hasan:

Are you ever going to stop doing your project? If so, why will you?

For the class:

If you could be on the other side, and be one of the people who get to watch the cameras and know everything about everyone, would you choose to do that?

Overkill

I understand why Great Britain has cameras on many “trouble spots,” but why would any city need bee size cameras flying around? How would that help reduce the crime rate? Or help with anything else? I don’t think it would.

If there are cameras on some street corners that go directly to the police, fine. That will protect people and it has been proven to. But is humanity in such ruins that Big Brother constantly needs to be watching everyone all the time? No it’s not. If people (authoritarian or not) had access to cameras on a wrist watch or over the internet to wherever they want, the only thing that would be doing is second guessing humanity and humans capability to look after themselves. I do not think we are at a point where we need that. I do not think enough humans perform felonies on a regular basis to need constant surveillance everywhere we go. So where is the line drawn between some cameras on street corners and cameras flying around in homes, offices, and schools? That line is harder to define, but I think we will know it when we see it. But hopefully we will not reach that point.

Story in 5 photos

Story in 5 photos

Here is another paining by Jay Ohlirch with similar qualities as...

Here is another paining by Jay Ohlirch with similar qualities as the previous one. It has less motion, however, and more blurry qualities which adds a feeling of being lost. The focus on the sky, again, adds a sense of hope and a focal point for the viewer. It is almost a goal the viewer is trying to reach.

Photo

Jay Ohlrich, Tree Lines

The lower third of this painting, by Jay Ohlrich, reminds me of Scream by Edvard Munch, which was shown in the Understanding Comics reading. The lines are very blurry, colorful, contrasty, and capture a sense of motion. Motion much like that of a picture taken out of a car window. There is a sense of confusion. Unlike Scream, however, there in not a sense of fear. I think this comes from the serenity of the trees and the clouds. The sky is very calm and the blues blend with the whites. The trees are pretty much in focus and also have a sense of placidity. The trees and the sky contrast with the moving ground which is interesting because even though the ground is rushing by in confusion, I feel the sky and trees are saying everything will be okay.

Conditional Design: Circles

Two other friends and I drew circles in different colors that had to have at least one over lap and one underneath arc segment. We learned as we went along that we didn’t have to be confined to the page, and could make the circles run off the page. Also we played with size. The end product looks pretty cool.
